Both natural Herkimer quartz crystals have inclusions of black hydrocarbon. Traditionally, this black material was called Anthraxolite. A relative of anthracite (coal), decayed plant material that fossilized.
However, new evidence suggests this smoky black material was caused by hydrocarbons verses anthraxolite. A hydrocarbon is a thick oily substance. The new theory suggests that hydrocarbons moved through the cracks and vugs along with dissolved quartz, salt and other minerals. At some point these fluids solidified, providing the areas to grow Herkimer Diamonds. This black substance can also be found in the pockets surrounding the Herkimer's. Sizes and descriptions of crystals for sale:
- Measures 16x9.5x7.5 mm / 6.2 ct. Black material is mainly external with interal bubble inclusions. Clarity is fair.
- 19x11.5x9.5 mm / 10.6 ct. Hydrocarbon is completely internal and formed as flat plates. Very interesting with a loupe, so we are including one! Good clarity.
Both are natural double terminated Herkimer quartz crystals.
