A very clear, large Herkimer Diamond. A Herkimer
Diamond is a rare naturally formed quartz crystal.
Herkimer, NY is one of the few placed on earth that these
raw quartz crystals are found. They can be found loose in
the dirt; but are most prized when vugs, or pockets of
them are found when mining the hard matrix dolomite
rock. Very few of this size and clarity are found.
It's double termination points consist of one sharp and
one chisel tip: see the picture above. The hopper crystal
marking is found at this end, see bottom picture. A
hopper crystal grew rapidly in stages. Each time new
growth started and stopped, a step occurred. At
termination you have a crystal that looks like it grew
wildly in different directions stepping down to a center
point. This pattern is external and is also referred to as
'negative skeletal' quartz. This hopper marking
covers a few facets.
Also near the chisel tip is found a 12 mm bridge crystal.
Most of it is inside the crystal, only one termination is
above the surface. Very cool to view with the loupe we are
including.
This one also has an unusual shape, the pictures represent
it well.
A large clear Herkimer Diamond hopper crystal with a lot
going on!
