An awesome specimen of a Herkimer penatration twin crystal. A twin crystal (also called twinning) is recognized as two individual quartz crystals that have grown together to the extent that they have merged, but terminated seperately. Twinned crystals may be contact twins or penetration twins. Contact twins typically have grown side to side and share a common facet point. With penetration twins the individual crystals grew point to point, as though they are passing through each other. Both termination tips are sharp, and the many complete facets are smooth. Clarity is fair, however, the internal inclusions that make it cloudy also present colorful sparkles. It is a Herkimer twin crystal with a generous size. |
