Overall, this lot of Herkimer specimens has good clarity. Sizes and descriptions:

  • An 8.5x6x4.5 mm crystal with golden hue and drusy.
  • A 9.75x7.5x6 mm single terminated specimen with excellent clarity.
  • This 10.5x5.5x4.5 mm smoky Herkimer Diamond is just double terminated.
  • A 11.5x7.5x5.5 mm double terminated twin crystal.
  • A 12x4.5x5.5 mm double terminated specimen with baby crystals near one tip. It has fair clarity and a golden hue.
  • This 12x6x5 mm single terminated gem has very good clarity and a window facet seen clearly with the naked eye.
  • This 14.5x7.5x6.5 mm has two tips, one clear and one cloudy.
  • A 16x9.5x6.5 mm sharp, single, water clear tip sets on a small amount of dolomite.

It is a well balanced lot of Herkimer specimens with many interesting attributes.

  Herkimer Diamonds were formed beneath a shallow sea bed. As water seeped thorough the pores of the dolomite rock, areas dissolved, creating pockets, or vugs. It is inside these vugs the quartz crystal specimens formed. Some pockets can contain thousands of diamonds, some are dry.
