Wow, at 3", this large Herkimer Diamond
is also double terminated! Both termination points are 'chisel tips'.
This refers to the flat edges of the tips, verses a sharp point (see
2nd picture from the top). A termination point occurs when six faces
(or facets) join together to form a point. When this occurs on both
ends, the crystal is double terminated. While a single terminated
quart crystal is quite common, double terminated quartz is not. Unless
you're a Herkimer Diamond that is!
All facets are present and many are large and smooth. However several
have rough mars on them. Two facets have deep holes present. I believe
originally this crystal had two large enhydros. Due to movement and
temperature changes, these pockets of water blew out, creating the
deep craters.
The crystal is chock full of internal fractures which give it lots
of character and rainbows.
This is a Herkimer Diamond that should probably be listed under C
Grade crystals because of the complete double termination points
and size. It is a unique find and anyone searching for a large Herkimer
Diamond will surely appreciate this fantastic crystal! |
