Each of the Herkimer Diamonds in this lot have a commonality - anthraxolite. Anthraxolite, a relative of coal, looks like small bits of carbon suspended in the stone, or attached to the exterior. It is actually bits of fossilized organic matter, probably some type of sea plant life. Sizes and descriptions as follows:
- A very pretty double terminated gemstone. Anthraxolite crystals suspend themselves completely in the center of the stone. Clarity is excellent as is definition on this 11.25x8x6 mm crystal. Upon closer examination, baby Herkimer Diamonds are seen. With a loupe, I count 4, all double terminated and bridges! They have excellent definition (much better than the pictures) and measure about 1-3 mm. It's A fantastic specimen.
- This long point, measuring 14.25x8.5x6 mm has great clarity as well. Technically double terminated, the complete tip is perfect. The anthraxolite is all external.
- A really nice tip, that, had it survived intact, would have been a scepter crystal. A scepter is recognized as a larger terminated crystal that forms around the top of a crystal rod. In the case of Herkimer Diamonds, the rod is crystallized anthraxolite. Some internal iron oxide is also present in this specimen, giving it golden healer properties. The rainbows in this gemstone are phenomenal. The point measures 18.5x11.x10.5 mm.
The black anthraxolite in this lot of Herkimer Diamonds give them all in a deep, rich hue; always popular among collectors.
I wish this lot of Herkimer Diamonds photographed better. The pictures do not do them justice. |
